Creative Writing

$15 members / $25 non-members

This class provides students with an opportunity to explore their creative gifts through writing. Assignments are given at each session and students are encouraged to share their work in class. The emphasis is on listening to your own creative voice. Aspects of creative writing such as description, use of metaphor, style, and voice are explored. Students are encouraged to enroll in the class and continue throughout the year. The class meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month throughout the year. Space permitting, students may enter after the class has begun with permission of the instructor prior to registration but they should note that material already covered will not be repeated. All new students must contact the instructor prior to registration.

 

The Old Testament Prophets: Isaiah

Modern prophetic scholarship distinguishes three separate compositions in Isaiah, the longest prophetic book in the Bible: First Isaiah, Second Isaiah and Third Isaiah. This class will examine the historical contexts and theological themes in each of these compositions and reflect on selected passages. Particular attention will be paid to First Isaiah’s call, prophecies against Judah and Jerusalem, remnant theology, the Servant Songs, and prophecies of hope and salvation.

This course will provide an in-depth look at the origins of the Apostles’ Creed and its practical implications for your spiritual journey today.

Designed for persons interested in exploring the nature of Christian faith and/or membership in Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, the class will include a review of core Christian doctrine, key tenets of Reformed faith, as well as an overview of worship and the sacraments. It will include an in-depth look at Fifth Avenue’s history, mission and ministry to examine the meaning of faith and membership. The course also offers the opportunity to meet all pastors. Lunch and worship will be included. Those desiring to unite with the church will meet with Session members and be recognized by the congregation at the following Sunday worship service.

 

Tools for Bible Study

Worship, prayer, service and Bible study are ingredients for living a life as a Christian. This two-session class will discuss the tools for fruitful Bible study, including translations, paraphrases, study Bibles, concordances, commentaries, an atlas etc. It will also examine the various methods of reading it, including those that encourage reading a number of chapters each day for one year; a chapter a day; meditation on a verse or passage until time to move on; and thematic readings. The class, led by Charles Dougherty, will review the principles for interpreting the Bible (hermeneutics) in a sound manner.

 

Adventure in New York: A Visit to Church of the Gethsemane, Brooklyn

Explore the spiritual traditions of a leading fellow Presbyterian church in New York with which FAPC has had long-standing ties, the Church of the Gethsemane in Park Slope. We’ll attend their Sunday service and then meet with a representative of the church for an inside look at their spiritual traditions and role in the community. You may want to make plans to go to one of Park Slope's many great restaurants for brunch afterwards!

 

The Architecture of the Sanctuary

In March 2008, Ford3 Architects completed a preservation study of the FAPC sanctuary, exploring its style, structure and history. Using the study as an instructional tool, this one-session class will explore the meaning and history of this beautiful worship space within the context of the church’s bicentennial celebration and discuss what our community of faith should do to preserve it. The program will be followed by an optional tour of the sanctuary.

 

Christmas Carols and Their Stories

FAPC musicians Don McManus and Mitchell Crawford offer a survey of some favorite music of Christmas, including what distinguishes a “carol” from a “hymn.” This one-day course is interactive, featuring both narrative and singing. You are invited to join us for a time of discovery about these beloved songs of the season.
